Common questions
CIS is HMRC's scheme for tax deductions in the construction industry. If you're a subcontractor in construction, your contractor deducts 20% (or 30% if you're not registered) from your payments and passes it to HMRC. As a registered subcontractor, you reclaim this via self assessment or corporation tax. Contractors must register and make monthly CIS returns to HMRC. We handle both sides.
Most construction services are standard-rated (20% VAT). However, certain works - like new residential construction - are zero-rated, and some renovation work is reduced-rated (5%). The domestic reverse charge also applies for VAT-registered sub-contractors working for VAT-registered contractors. Getting this wrong is common and costly - we ensure the correct treatment.
It depends on income level and risk. A limited company offers limited liability (useful if things go wrong on a job) and can be tax-efficient above around £30,000–£40,000 in profit. Many contractors are pushed to incorporate for IR35 or contract reasons. We'll talk through your specific situation on a discovery call.
Tools and equipment, vehicle costs (van, fuel, mileage), PPE and workwear, subcontractor costs, materials used on jobs, business insurance, professional fees, phone, and a portion of home office costs. Getting expenses right makes a real difference to your tax bill. We review your outgoings as part of your annual return.
