Who it's for

Any VAT-registered UK business. VAT registration is compulsory when taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 (as of 2024/25). We also advise on voluntary registration, which can be beneficial for VAT-registered customers or when input VAT reclaims are significant.

Frequently asked questions

You must register for VAT when your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in a rolling 12-month period (2024/25 threshold). You must register within 30 days of exceeding this threshold. You can also register voluntarily below this level - useful if most of your customers are businesses who can reclaim the VAT.

MTD for VAT requires all VAT-registered businesses to keep digital records and submit VAT returns using MTD-compatible software. This has been mandatory since April 2022. We submit all VAT returns via MTD-compliant software as standard.

The standard rate scheme suits most businesses. The flat rate scheme can save money for service businesses with low input VAT - you charge 20% but pay HMRC a lower flat rate depending on your trade. Cash accounting suits businesses with slow-paying customers as you only pay VAT when you're paid. We'll advise which is optimal for you.

HMRC moved to a penalty points system in 2023. Each late return adds a penalty point; at 4 points you receive a £200 fine and £200 for each subsequent late return. Interest applies on late payments. We submit returns well before the deadline so this never becomes an issue.
